Don’t miss the Globe’s inimitably crotchety Alex Beam on what’s sure to be a highly buzzed-about diet. He reports from London, where he’s been reading a lot of those cheesy British tabloids, that “royal fiancee Kate Middleton” and “’her slenderific Mum, the former air hostess, are faithful followers of the Dukan diet, the creation of French nutritionist Pierre Dukan.”
Alex describes the four phases of the diet, which does sound an awful lot like the South Beach plan, and notes its celebrity pedigree:
Who helped put the Dukan diet on the map in the English-speaking world? None other than Mrs. Tom Brady, a.k.a. supermodel Bundchen, who used the bizarre regimen to shed pounds after the birth of her son Benjamin.
Then, bless him, he adds some of his characteristic acerbic skepticism, some of it even culled, so continentally, from the French press:
Just last week the Institut Pasteur in Lille released a study asserting that “France’s most popular weight-loss regimes, including the number one Dukan diet, are ineffective and potentially dangerous to people’s health,’’ according to Le Parisien newspaper.
