Celia, BRAVO to you for once again eloquently bringing this issue to light. I lost a friend who survived cancer treatment and surgery but did not survive an infection acquired at one of the best hospitals in the world.
Paul, you have no idea how meaningful your commitment to quality is to the average person, marked by your willingness to make the results public -- for better or for worse.
You are not only saving costs in the long run -- you are saving lives. Thank you!

Celia,

It is, indeed, a good step, but not the first one. Some of us are already publishing this information. As you wisely suggest, doing so is good for the public to know and helpful for the hospital to improve its performance in these important areas.

Perhaps, for example, you have not heard about BIDMC's website, http://www.bidmc.harvard.edu, "The Facts at BIDMC," where we regularly post this kind of information for the public to see. We also posted, for all to see, the report from the Joint Commission after its recent unannounced survey of our hospital.

Hospitals would not need to be told by the DPH to do this if they would voluntarily do it. Nothing stands in their way right now.
