Tomorrow the Connector Board meets and will update enrollment numbers. Here is the first significant tally on how many people are buying the new “affordable” insurance products. As of 9/1 there are 7, 164 (5, 337 members and 1,827 dependents). Blue Cross has the largest share (37%) followed by Harvard Pilgrim (23%) and then Neighborhood Health Plan (18%).

The update for the subsidized insurance program (Commonwealth Care) is here. As of 9/1 there were 115,418 members. 80.5% qualify for and are receiving free coverage.

Are these the numbers you expect at this stage?

I commend any move towards universal healthcare, but as flexible and democratic as the solution in MA seems to be, it lacks a way for people who are truly left out to have their voices heard and have a solution.

I immigrated to this country 14 years ago, and last year decided to bring my parents over. I am well to do, quite capable of taking care of my needs and theirs and they have good medical coverage in their home country through their employer’s retiree plans that cover them irrespective of nationality or residence.

After waiting nearly 14 months for their immigration procedures to be completed, we now find the MA insurance program an imposition that will either needlessly impose undue financial strain (I was quoted over $1300/month in coverage since they are both in their 70s), or more realistically, ask them to stay back in their “home” country.

    Skinas,

Welcome to the land of opportunity, where unless you are rich or extremely poor, you are on your own.
