Two Congressmen, James Langevin (D-RI) and Chris Shays (R-CT) plan to file a bill tomorrow they call the first bi-partisan universal health care plan to come from the US House of Representatives. It would:

1) create a new agency modeled on the federal employee health care benefits program
2) let anyone buy one of the plans offered by this new agency
3) pay 72% of premiums – with sliding scale subsidies to cover the balance for low income Americans
4) use funds from a payroll tax to cover expenses
5) require that everyone have health insurance

The bill adopts the “everyone must share the responsibility for health coverage” theme that we’ve heard so often in Massachusetts.

Here’s a link to the bill.

What a crock. Did you notice that one of the lead co-sponsors of is a (R-CT)? CT is home of the for-profit insurance industry.

Congress must really think we are idiots. This “new” bill is like a farce, just like the “landmark” MA law has turned out to be.

This farce is laid out very nicely in a recent op-ed:

After many years of managing large organizations in the corporate world I started my own small discount office furniture business five years ago. I have struggled to offer a solid health care plan for my employees. We have had steady growth over the years, but not the cost of health care has grown even faster. Do you know of any states that offer a subsidized small business health care plan like Arkansas?

Another convoluted mish mash. The jargon must be written by the insurance companies. This proves we need a single payer system. The people of the United States have to settle for nothing else or we will all be bankrupt. When will we all band together and say no more rip off insurance.
